Pet Orthodontics in Beaverton, OR
Just like people, pets can benefit from braces. At Premier Pet Dentistry, we’re proud to offer veterinary orthodontics that reposition improperly aligned teeth, relieve painful bite problems, and help your dog or cat chew and play comfortably for life.
What Is Veterinary Orthodontics?
Braces and other orthodontic appliances are used to reposition teeth that are improperly aligned or maloccluded. During your pet’s initial oral examination, we perform a bite (occlusal) evaluation. If the bite isn’t correct, orthodontic treatment may be recommended. Our goal is always comfort and function — not cosmetic appearance. Learn more about bite problems on our malocclusion page.
Why Bite Problems Need Treatment
Teeth that strike other teeth or soft tissues can cause tooth fractures, tooth inflammation, periodontal inflammation, pain, and even tooth loss. Traumatic malocclusions can also contribute to periodontal disease and, when lower canines puncture the palate, may lead to an oronasal fistula.
Infection from a dead or damaged tooth can spread beyond the mouth through a process called anachoresis, in which bacteria travel through the bloodstream to organs such as the liver and kidneys. Correcting harmful bites helps prevent that cascade.
Orthodontic Options for Pets
We evaluate malocclusions right here in our office and discuss any recommended diagnostics and your treatment options. Your pet’s age is an important factor:
- Interceptive orthodontics: Performed primarily on baby teeth or a mix of baby and adult teeth, including extraction of retained baby teeth to allow the jaws to develop more normally.
- Incline planes: Appliances that guide lower canines into a comfortable position.
- Custom appliances and braces: Used to move individual teeth into proper alignment.
- Crown extensions: Placed through our restorative service to help redirect teeth.
- Alternatives: Crown reduction with vital pulp therapy through our endodontics service or extraction through oral surgery when moving the tooth isn’t practical.

Pet Orthodontics FAQs
Do dogs and cats really wear braces?
Yes. Orthodontic appliances, including braces and incline planes, can move teeth into comfortable, functional positions.
When should my puppy’s bite be evaluated?
Bites should be checked during puppy visits and again as adult teeth erupt, usually between 4 and 7 months of age, when interceptive treatment is most effective.
Is pet orthodontics cosmetic?
No. Treatment is recommended to relieve pain and prevent trauma, not to change appearance.
What happens if a bite problem isn’t treated?
Teeth that hit other teeth or soft tissue can cause fractures, painful wounds, periodontal disease, and tooth loss.
How long does orthodontic treatment take?
Many appliances are worn for several weeks to a few months, with rechecks to monitor tooth movement.
Are there alternatives to braces?
Yes. Interceptive extractions, crown reduction with vital pulp therapy, or extraction of the offending tooth may resolve the problem.
Does age affect orthodontic options?
Yes. Young pets may benefit from interceptive treatment on baby teeth, while adult pets may need appliances or other alternatives.
