Why Oral Health Matters for Your Pet

Our patients can’t tell us when their mouth hurts, and many pets silently suffer from oral pain or infection. When disease creeps up gradually, it can be hard to recognize in a pet you see every day. There is no question that dental disease affects quality of life, and studies show it impacts systemic health and longevity as well. Our passion is restoring and maintaining comfort for pets in every life stage — and our favorite moment is hearing how much better your pet feels after treatment.

Conditions like periodontal disease, fractured teeth, and tooth resorption are extremely common and often hidden below the gumline. That’s why every evaluation includes a thorough oral exam and full-mouth dental x-rays.

Your Primary Care Veterinarian Is Part of the Team

Dentistry is what we do, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. We rely on your primary care veterinarian to oversee the rest of your pet’s health so we can focus on what we do best. Your veterinarian has likely provided wellness care for years and should continue to do so. If you don’t have a regular veterinarian or have recently moved, we may be able to help you find one in your area.

Veterinary dentistry is a vast and rapidly changing field, and there is growing evidence of how oral health affects the rest of the body. While we obsess over all things related to the mouth, we defer to your regular veterinarian to provide or coordinate care in other areas. This partnership helps ensure we have the whole picture and that your pet has continuity of care. Veterinarians can send cases through our referral page.

Though Dr. Martin and her team prefer to work from our Beaverton office, she can travel to your primary veterinarian’s hospital on request. Let us know how we can help, and we will do our best to accommodate.

Dental Care Designed Around You and Your Pet

We listen to what you want and need for your pet so we can create a practical, customized plan. Most people don’t realize that veterinary dentistry can now offer almost everything human dentistry does, including root canal therapy, crowns and restorations, orthodontics, periodontal therapy, oral medicine, and advanced oral surgery. The biggest questions are which options apply to your pet’s mouth, what the prognosis is, and what is sustainable. Those answers may change depending on your pet’s age, overall health, temperament for home care, and your personal circumstances.

Communication is key. We take time to understand your goals and blend that information with what we know is possible for treatment. Every family and patient is unique, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach. We work to restore comfort and find sustainable solutions for maintenance — and while that sometimes means extractions, extraction is usually the least desirable option. Each situation can open up a host of possibilities to get and keep your pet on track.
